Wanted in 17 cases, man killed in police ‘encounter’ in Gonda

The UP Police’s Special Task Force (STF) gunned down a 48-year-old man, who was wanted in 17 cases and carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 for information on him, in an alleged encounter in Gonda district early Saturday morning.

The 17 cases against Vijay Singh alias Bijendra Singh alias Biji were registered under murder, robbery, attempt to murder and other charges in Ambedkar Nagar, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya and Amethi district, said police.

The Ambedkar Nagar police had been looking for Singh, a native of the district, in a murder case of one Sachin alias Puju Tiwari, who was shot dead in January last year, said a police officer.

According to police, they were tipped on Saturday that Singh was going to Nawabganj area to commit a crime. The police laid a trap and spotted him riding a motorcycle at Paraspur-Nawabganj area around 6 am.

“When he was asked him to surrender, he opened fire at the police team. The police retaliated and a bullet hit him,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.

When firing stopped, the police approached Singh and saw him lying with bullet injuries. Singh was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

The police claimed to have recovered a .32 pistol, a cellphone and the motorcycle, allegedly used in the crime, from the 48-year-old man.
