UP polls a fight between dynasts, diehard nationalists, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Uttar Pradesh elections are a fight between the dynasts and diehard nationalists, which the opposition parties do not understand.

Addressing his second election rally of the day in Deoria, Modi attacked previous governments in Uttar Pradesh, saying they shut sugar mills and didn’t clear dues of sugarcane farmers.

Whereas the Yogi Adityanath government modernised sugar mills and facilitated ethanol blending, which fetched about Rs 12,000 crore for the state, the PM said.

The Assembly constituencies in Deoria district will go to the polls in the sixth phase of the elections on March 3.

Development of state was never Akhilesh Yadav’s priority, says Yogi Adityanath

Slamming Samajwadi Party (SP), Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the development of the state was never the priority of the party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Addressing a public rally at Caimpiyarganj Assembly constituency in Gorakhpur, the Chief Minister said, “When I asked an SP leader to list development works done under his party, he replied that infrastructure, medical facilities, roads were not their priority…”

He said the Akhilesh Yadav party’s agenda was to get the ‘Kabristan (Cemetry) boundary’ made.

In a veiled attack on SP leader, Adityanath said, “Itar Wale Mitra’ accumulated the money in their lockers, focused on ‘Sabka Saath Par Sirf Saifai Ka Vikas’…”

He said “if the SP government was in power then COVID-19 vaccines would have been sold in markets and no poor would have got it. But the BJP ensured that no one was deprived of it.”

Climate change, promise of clean air and water missing from UP poll agenda

The vital issue of clean air and water is missing from the Uttar Pradesh elections though several cities here often figure in the list of the world’s 10 most polluted.

Despite clean water and air being the mainstay of life, major political parties, except for the Samajwadi Party, Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal, have not included the issue of environmental protection prominently in their election manifestos.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has a degree in environmental engineering from Australia but his party manifesto just has a reference about climate issue sans any major announcement to deal with the problem. Even the Congress has touched on some aspects of climate change in its manifesto, but has not spoken of any concrete initiative.

The issue hasn’t got much importance in BJP poll manifesto. The saffron party has mentioned cleaning of the river Ganga but has not mentioned anything about countering climate change.

Don-politician Mukhtar Ansari not in fray this time but remains centre of attention

Derided by the BJP as a mascot of the criminal-and-mafia raj during Akhilesh Yadav’s previous rule in Uttar Pradesh, jailed don-politician Mukhtar Ansari is out of the poll fray this time and his son is instead contesting as the opposition alliance candidate in his Mau seat.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders have been taking Mukhtar Ansari’s name to attack the Samajwadi Party on the issue of law and order and how the Yogi Adityanath government ran bulldozers on his properties.

Mukhtar Ansari’s 30-year-old son Abbas Ansari has been fielded in the election by the SP’s ally Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) of Om Prakash Rajbhar as the coalition nominee in the seat, where voting will take place in the seventh and last phase on March 7.
