LUCKNOW: Chandani Bharti, 21, who hails from a small hamlet in
Kannauj district, had a traumatic journey home from war-torn
Ukraine to the Hungary border before her flight to freedom to India.
She fell ill, ran out of cash, booked a bus to
Poland and was then forced to flee towards the Hungarian border. “I first tried to move towards the Polish border, but was denied entry. Later, I trekked towards the Hungarian border and slept in the open in freezing temperatures for two days.
I was hungry and ill,” she told TOI.
“I had to shell out Rs 2.5 lakh to reach the Hungary gate from
Ternopil State Medical University, and will never forget the journey,” said Chandani. She said the government had not made any effort to evacuate students stranded in Ukraine cities.
