Park at Sarita Vihar with green message
New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has opened an eco-mitra park in Sarita Vihar.
The initiative is part of the south corporation’s drive to motivate people to reuse household waste to make usable items. The first such green centre was set up near Central Market, Lajpat Nagar. It remains open for the general public from 11 am to 4 pm.
“We have used coloured discarded bottles for guarding the flowering plants at the eco-mitra park.
Likewise, we have coloured the old tyres and are using them for creating partitions at the park and adorning areas around grown plants. Some decorative materials have also been used to improve the aesthetic appeal of the area,” said area councillor Neetu Chaudhary.
The park has been developed in association with a trust and at a zero cost. “Through the initiative, SDMC has been promoting the principle of 3Rs i.e. refuse, reuse and recycle. Beautiful artworks have been made from old tyres, bottles, unused items at this park,” said a south corporation official.
At the Lajpat Nagar park, people are also told about ways for waste segregation at source, home composting through biodegradable waste, use of old cloth for making shopping bags, use of recycled products, etc. Visitors can buy compost, enzymes and other recycled products from this place too.
“We have engaged several NGOs to help the locals and inquisitive visitors in understanding the subject carefully and to motivate them to pick up any of these tasks at home,” said the official.
