Gadag farmer grows rare varieties of wheat

Mruthyunjay Vastrad, a resident of Shirol village in Nargund taluk of Gadag district, has grown buckwheat, black wheat, and Sonamoti wheat in his fields.He told reporters here on Monday that he will distribute 50% of the crop to farmers as seeds.

Hubballi: Mruthyunjay Vastrad, a resident of Shirol village in Nargund taluk of Gadag district, has grown buckwheat, black wheat, and Sonamoti wheat in his fields.
He told reporters here on Monday that he will distribute 50% of the crop to farmers as seeds.
Sonamoti wheat has a 4,500-years-old history, he claimed. After sowing 30kg seeds, he has harvest 6 quintals of the crop.
Buckwheat is gluten-free and got an yield of 60kg by sowing 3kg of seeds, he said, and added that black wheat is an immunity booster.
He has sown 6kg seeds for a 70kg harvest.
Vastrad also claimed that he is experimenting wih rare crops after collecting the seeds from different places. To a query, Vastrad said he will approach the UAS for certification.
