Haveri: Local administrative bodies at the grassroots often find it difficult to discharge their duties, either because it is exceedingly hard to navigate the intricate web of bureaucratic red tape, or because of the apathetic attitude of the elected representatives themselves.
However, the gram panchayats in Haveri district, have defied expectations, and set a new benchmark for efficiency in local administration by exceeding the target set for tax collection in their respective jurisdiction – a feat that has earned praise from across the board.

Although Haveri district was carved out 25 years ago, the zilla panchayat had failed to meet its revenue target even once hitherto, but the collective and coordinated efforts of the panchayat development officers, secretaries, bill collectors, accountants and the elected members of all gram panchayats, have earned the district this rare distinction.
Haveri ZP chief executive officer (CEO) Mohammad Roshan lauded the efforts of all officials, and elected members, and thanked them for their cooperation in executing all government schemes. “Against a revenue target of Rs 16 crore, the GPs across Haveri have cumulatively collected Rs 16.5 crore in taxes in the 2021-22 financial year,” said Roshan.
Furthermore, the GP’s achievement has helped the district administration reduce the revenue fiscal deficit from Rs 97.7 lakh, which was the figure when the district was carved out, to Rs 81.7 lakh. “This figure will subsequently peter down to zero, if the GPs continue to exceed revenue targets for the next decade,” the Haveri ZP CEO said.
Panchayat development officer for Kodiyalahospet GP in Ranebennur taluk, M Ambika said that the local administrative body had succeeded in exceeding its revenue target owing to the concerted efforts of all the officials and elected members. “The revenue we have collected will ensure that all panchayat personnel are paid their salary, and provide all necessary services to the people,” she said.
Former Haveri ZP member Siddaraj Kalkoti heaped praise on all those who had worked hard to achieve this rare administrative feat. He expressed hope of the remaining deficit of Rs 81 lakh reducing to zero soon.
