With summer reaching its peak, Ganjam district is witnessing an outbreak of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases. More than 90 people have been affected by the disease over the past four days.

Berhampur: With summer reaching its peak, Ganjam district is witnessing an outbreak of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases. More than 90 people have been affected by the disease over the past four days.
Also, 75 people got infected with other water-borne diseases in Kabisurya Nagar and its adjoining villages. Some of them have been admitted to hospital since March 27.
Sixteen people have been admitted to Bhatakumarada hospital in the past three days.
Sources said use of contaminated water has caused the outbreak of diarrhoea and similar ailments in the region. No death due to diarrhoea has been reported so far in the district.
“The situation, so far, is under control. No fresh case of diarrhoea was reported from Purushottampur block on Friday, though four cases were reported in Kabisurya Nagar,” said additional district medical officer (public health) Jagadish Patnaik.
“Only four persons are undergoing treatment at the Kabisurya Nagar community health centre (CHC), while one at the Bhatakumarada CHC. All patients are in good condition. ” Patnaik added. “We have collected stool and water samples from Kabisurya Nagar to be sent to the microbiology department of MKCG Medical College here to ascertain the outbreak of cholera. We have also asked engineers of the Public Health Engineer Department at Kabisurya Nagar to purify water before supplying,” he said.
District health authorities said wells and ponds are being disinfected and people asked to consume only boiled water.
