BENGALURU: A 35-year-old homemaker lost Rs 2 lakh after she responded to a letter claiming she had won a gift.
The victim is Jyothi TK, a resident of Tagachegere village in Ramanagara district. According to police, Jyothi had purchased a sewing machine from an online marketplace five years ago. On March 25, she received a postal letter which had a scratch card. It informed her she had received the scratch card for purchasing the sewing machine and she should claim the gift.

When Jyothi scratched the card, it showed that she had won Rs 12.8 lakh. She called the phone number that was printed on the letter. “They replied to me with a congratulatory message and asked for my photos and bank passbook. Later, they started demanding money in the name of various charges,” she stated in her complaint.
Jyothi started transferring money to the accounts provided by the suspects, giving a total of Rs 2 lakh in seven transactions between March 28 and 31. But she grew suspicious as they continued to ask for money and filed a police complaint on April 11.
