In fresh trouble for Samajwadi Party MLA Mohammad Azam Khan, a court in Firozabad district has issued a non-bailable warrant against him in an over 15 years old case.
The case pertains to Azam Khan allegedly making provocative and objectionable remarks while campaigning ahead of assembly elections in Firozabad in April 2007.
The prominent Muslim leader, who has been behind bars for over two years, has been ordered to appear before the additional judicial magistrate in Firozabad on April 30.
A case was registered against Azam Khan at Rasulpur police station on April 4, 2007. Azam Khan was booked for breaching Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, as well as violation of the model code of conduct and Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
Currently lodged in Sitapur jail, Azam Khan contested the Rampur assembly seat in the recent UP polls and won for the tenth time. He served as a cabinet minister when the Samajwadi Party was in power between 2012 and 2017
