Hyderabad: For the past two years, people have been using hand sanitisers. Everyone keeps it in their homes to avoid the coronavirus. But in recent times, it has been seen that along with protection from infection, sanitisers have become a problem for many families. The biggest example of this in Hyderabad. A report revealed that in large statistics here, people are drinking sanitisers to commit suicide.  According to a report received, during the last year, at least 80 persons in Hyderabad have tried to suicide by drinking hand sanitisers. In addition, 20 more cases have been reported from around the city. All these figures are from the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

According to experts, due to Corona, people's access to sanitisers has become very easy. Many people are also drinking it mixed with alcohol to have fun. Dr Ashima Sharma, head of the department of emergency medicine at NIMS, said, "While some individuals have consumed it directly, in many cases people also have a tendency to mix it with alcohol. Mainly because of the ease of access, the use of sanitisers has increased dramatically since the pandemic hit. Now sanitisers are among other substances like floor cleaners, bathroom cleaners, disinfectant herbs and pesticides used by people.''

According to a statistic, 50 per cent of the sanitisers in the market these days are fake. According to experts, the use of sanitisers causes irritation in the gastro-cranial tract. Although patients survive normally, they repeatedly enter a long cycle of surgery. A junior doctor of the emergency department at Gandhi Hospital in the state said, "Many youths living in hostels, who fail in love or fail in exams, often try to commit suicide using anything easily available. Usually, we see cases of extensive gastrointestinal tract burns, as most swallow a whole bottle of sanitiser.''
