2022 Thundernator says Derby Festival honor feels like being a 'kid on Christmas morning'
This year's Thundernator says being picked for the Derby City honor feels like being a "little kid on Christmas morning."
On Monday, Kentucky Derby Festival organizers revealed the identity of the 2022 Derby City Fanatic. Lillie Ingram won the honor through a contest with the Kentucky Lottery.
As part of her big win, she will serve as the Thundernator for the Derby Festival opening ceremonies at Thunder Over Louisville this Saturday, April 23. That means she will have the opportunity to provide the Thunder countdown and "zero ignition to active the launch system sequence in the command center at the Galt House Hotel," meaning she'll be the one to launch the fireworks.
This is a special win for Ingram and her first time participating in Thunder Over Louisville. Organizers said the win comes just a few weeks after Ingram's father died.

Ingram was his long-time caregiver and also worked as a professional caregiver.
"I've wanted to go to things like Thunder for years, but I needed to take care of my father instead," she said.
This year's Derby Festival events will be some of the first things Ingram gets to do in her free time since her father's passing, organizers said.
Ingram's VIP experience includes serving as the 2022 Thundernator, VIP tickets to Thunder Over Louisville, a tour of Churchill Downs and seats to Derby Festival Day at Downs on Thurby. She will also get $500 in spending money.
The announcement comes as one of Louisville's biggest and most exciting events gets back to normal for the first time since the pandemic. You'll be able to catch all the Thunder action on WLKY — this year's official broadcast partner.
