New Delhi:  Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), will attend the inauguration of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Tuesday. The Global Centre in Jamnagar will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Gujarat.

On March 25, the WHO and the Indian government reached an agreement to build the Centre in Gujarat. At a press conference in Delhi, WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan lauded the opening of a "first-of-its-kind" traditional medicine centre in Gujarat. "This is the first of its kind centre," he stated, "that will assist the entire world in investing in traditional medicine." The Ministry of Ayush and the Government of Gujarat held a curtain-raiser press conference on Monday to discuss two important developments in the field of traditional medicine in India: the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) groundbreaking ceremony and the convening of the Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS).

Both ceremonies will be conducted in Gujarat and will be attended by Prime Minister Modi, Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth, and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, according to an official announcement from the Ministry of Ayush. The Centre aspires to harness traditional medicine's potential by combining it with technological breakthroughs and evidence-based research. The new Centre will be based in Jamnagar, but it will engage and benefit the entire world. To maximise conventional medicine's contribution to global health, the GCTM will focus on four core strategic areas: evidence and learning, data and analytics, sustainability and equity, and innovation and technology.

The Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit will take place in Gandhinagar from April 20 to 22. The goal of the Summit is to increase investment and highlight breakthroughs in traditional medicine. It's a one-of-a-kind effort to build long-term relationships, increase exports, and maintain a healthy ecology.
