A grade IV contractual staffer at RG Kar Hospital was arrested by the Tala Police based on a complaint by the hospital administration alleging that he was trying to dupe a health department official and "sell" reserved trustee seats of the college for the MBBS course against Rs 25 lakh.

The city continued to be scorched by the sizzling westerly winds with the maximum temperature hovering around 40°C for the third consecutive day. Even as the Met office sounded a heatwave alert for most districts in south Bengal till April 28, the maximum temperature in Kolkata dropped marginally to 39.5°C on Monday from 39.6°C a day earlier. It may slide by a degree on Tuesday as the westerly has been predicted to lose intensity. But it will continue to be warm and uncomfortable with no chance of rain, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) till April 28.
