Chandauli woman’s death: Autopsy says cause of death ‘unknown’

The findings of the postmortem report are in contrast with Circle Officer (Chandauli) Anil Rai’s earlier statement that “the woman appeared to have died by suicide.”

A day after a probe was ordered into the alleged death of a 24-year-old woman during a raid by Chandauli police in the district’s Sayedraja area, the postmortem report stated the cause of death as unknown and found two external injuries on the body, police said.

Following the complaint filed by the woman’s brother, an FIR has been filed against six police officials – including Sayedraja Station House Officer Uday Pratap Singh. Singh was suspended on Monday by Superintendent of Police of Chandauli Ankur Aggarwal.

On Sunday, Aggarwal had ordered a probe into the allegations of a police team “manhandling” two daughters of criminal Kanhaiya Yadav during a raid, leading to the death of one in Sayedraja area of the district.

The deceased was identified as Gudiya Yadav alias Nisha.

The alleged incident took place on Sunday around 4 pm when a police team, comprising men and women personnel, had gone to Kanhaiya Yadav’s residence at Manrajpur village in Chandauli to arrest him after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by a local court, police said.

Police had said that as Kanhaiya was not present, they returned. Two hours later, a purported video went viral in which the deceased’s younger sister Gunja Yadav (21) is seen lying on the floor and alleging that the police thrashed her and her elder sister. In another video that went viral, the woman’s family claimed that she died after she was beaten by the raiding police team.

The findings of the postmortem report are in contrast with Chandauli Circle Officer (Chandauli) Anil Rai’s earlier statement that “the woman appeared to have died by suicide.”

Talking about the postmortem report, Rai on Monday said, “Yesterday, the woman’s family told the police that they found her body hanging from a fan in a room of the house after the police left. They have been misleading us since yesterday by making false claims and have been frequently changing statements.”

However, the deceased’s family denied Rai’s allegations, “No one in our family told police that they found Gudiya hanging in the house. These statements police made on their own.”

A day after the deceased’s elder brother Vijay Yadav filed a complaint at Sayedraja police station, an FIR was also lodged on Monday against six police personnel – Station House Officer of Sayedraja police station Uday Pratap Singh, four women constables and one Sanjay Singh. They have been booked under Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt Hurt usually relates to non-fatal offences which do not result in the death of any person), 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. However, no arrests have been made so far, police said.

“According to the postmortem report, two minor injuries – one on the neck and the other on the jaw— were found on the body. Except for them, no other internal or external injuries were found on any other part of the body. The report stated that the cause of death could not be ascertained and the woman’s viscera has been preserved,” said Aggarwal, while adding that cause of death would be confirmed only after obtaining the report of viscera examination.

Gudiya’s family had also alleged that she was raped during the raid. Reacting to the family’s allegations of rape, the SP said, “The postmortem report stated that except for the two injuries, there are no other internal or external injuries on the body.” The woman’s vaginal swab has been collected and is being sent for examination, he added. He also said that postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors and the process was videographed.

The police also started recording the statement of the deceased’ s family members and neighbours on Monday.

“As part of the probe, we would recreate the crime scene and we will also consult forensic experts in the case,” said Aggarwal.

“The inquiry into the entire incident is still under process. Additional Superintendent of Police, Sadar, (Chandauli) Chiranjib Mukherjee is yet to complete the probe and file his report. All videos related to the case will be looked into and action would be taken on the basis of the inquiry report,” the SP added.

Meanwhile, the woman’s younger brother Vishal Yadav said that he and his family were not informed about the postmortem report. “Police did not inform me about postmortem report but I am sure that she (Gudiya) died because she was beaten up by the police team that raided my house. She had injuries on her body,” he told The Indian Express.

According to sources, local residents had pelted stones at the police team during the raid and blocked the road. They allegedly pelted stones on police vehicles and also thrashed two cops, who sustained injuries.

“The condition of the injured policemen is stable and they are undergoing treatment in hospital. We have collected videos of the violence and action would be taken against miscreants after the injured policemen file an FIR,” said Aggarwal.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav slammed the government and said that “an investigation should be launched.”
“…Due to political misuse of police under BJP rule, UP Police has become so unbridled and cruel,” he tweeted in Hindi.
