Probe into Chandauli girl's death likely to be handed over to CB-CID

Thursday, 12 May 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government will hand over the probe into the alleged harassment by the cops of Chandauli police leading to the death of a girl, to the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID).

The family members had demanded a probe by an independent investigating agency and also staged a dharna demanding the arrest of the guilty cops.

Sources in the Home department confirmed that the probe will be handed over to the CB-CID after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath clears the file. Formal order in this regard is likely to be issued any time. Senior officials at DGP headquarters said that the probe was being handed over to the CB-CID on the demand of the family of the deceased.

On May 3, Kanhaiya Yadav, father of the girl, who died allegedly due to police torture during a raid in Chandauli, was admitted to hospital after his condition deteriorated. He was on a hunger strike demanding justice for his daughter. The girl's father demanded the arrest of the accused station house officer under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

His other daughter, Gunja Yadav, was also admitted to hospital as her condition also deteriorated due to shock of her sister’s death.

Talking to media persons, Kanhaiya Yadav raised questions about police intentions. "The police officials are trying to save the accused 'Kotwal'(SHO) Uday Pratap Singh and other police personnel involved in the incident. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide which is wrong and a case of murder needs to be registered against the guilty policemen. They should be arrested to ensure a fair investigation into the incident," he said

Referring to some photos that were taken in the presence of senior police officials, he said marks of belt and shoe injuries were clearly visible on his daughter’s body but they were not mentioned in the post-mortem report and added that the panel of doctors had also not clarified the cause of death which raised questions on the investigation process.

It may be mentioned that the SHO of Saiyadraja police station in Chandauli district was suspended after a 21-year-old girl Nisha died after she was allegedly assaulted by policemen during a raid. The police, however, denied the allegation, saying that the woman appeared to have committed suicide.

Police had raided the house of gangster Kanhaiya Yadav in Manrajpur village to arrest him after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him. Yadav had been accused in a case of illegal sand mining. However, as the police officials could not find Yadav at his home, they allegedly tried to take his brother with them. Yadav's daughter, Nisha, tried to stop the police, following which she was allegedly beaten by the officers leading to her death.
