Scaling Agile In Large Enterprises: Four Most Roadblocks While Doing It

If you’re transitioning from Scrum to SAFe, you need to take the Scaled Agile certification training.

Bengaluru, 11th May 2022: - When companies make the transition to an agile approach, there are challenges. However, organizations can avoid some of the common mistakes by keeping culture first and ensuring that people are on board with the idea.

The concepts of Agile—quick development, learning, and adaptation—have been embraced by Silicon Valley, creating a movement that relies on the principles of rapid change and deployment. Agile was originally designed as a way to write software without deploying features for months or years. The term ‘Agile’ evolved to encompass different aspects of software development, including iterative and incremental development, continuous updates with customers, user-focused solutions, and working in a multi-functional organization. These parts are all driven by a desire to be more responsive to users which creates more priority on learning practices and training programs.

Scaling agile software development across an organization can be a rewarding experience, or it may turn into a tense and difficult process. There are three pitfalls to avoid if you want to avoid running into trouble when scaling agile.

Many large companies have found that they must go through a disruptive transition in order to achieve their goals. However, some of these companies have faced severe obstacles along the way. Based on our experience with these transitions, we perceive the following obstacles as typical barriers to agile scaling:

  1. Lack Of Harmony

Consensus is required when making decisions about many options. For example, team members must agree on their tasks and team positions throughout the rest of the value chain. Managers need to negotiate how and when to communicate with each other so that they can support agile practices at the initial and above level. Management must communicate with other departments in order to ensure that strategic plans for long-term and agile strategies can work effectively together.

The higher the barriers to communication and understanding, the more difficult it will be to reach a consensus. And since Agile requires just such a consensus in order to work, teams that have such issues will find it impossible to use scaling agile effectively.

  1. Lack Of Support From Leaders

Leaders must prepare to take responsibility for problems in their part of the system and make the necessary changes for continual improvement. It is also important for leaders to maintain contact with other stakeholders in the organization so that their actions and decisions benefit the whole, not just a small part, of the overall picture.

It's important for people to have leadership skills and an understanding of agile concepts and systems for the integration of teams into the wider value chain and promotion of their impact on other parts of the organization.

  1. No Recognition For Team’s Skills

The focus on attracting and hiring the best candidates is one reason Silicon Valley has become a popular location for startups. Creativity is the fuel that powers an agile engine. It helps companies like Amazon to build teams with fully integrated, experienced staff members who have high-quality experiences.

Although agile management plans have become popular, traditional management plans remain important to companies that have not yet adopted the agile innovation method. Some important considerations include the following:

  • What features are needed for a successful agile organization?
  • Where do geniuses with such qualities come from?
  • How will these employees be treated when they behave gracefully?
  1. Not Keeping Importance To Agile

Although it is crucial to start small when introducing an agile approach to your organization, it is also important not to stop there. The benefits of going agile are far greater than you might expect from simple pilot projects.

For example, a large organization in North America had tried to integrate agile policies into its organization, which employs more than 1,000 people. They would have little knowledge every time business leaders were asked and associated with agile: "A job that technicians are trying to do - we don't understand anything."

After the implementation of agile methods, there was a limited impact for 18 months. However, after a major shift occurred when one senior executive started to show interest in identifying, adapting, and implementing his business practices to fit an agile organization, the entire company began to transform. Today agile has been identified as one of the company's top five priorities.

Final Thoughts

There were other difficulties as well that delayed your transition to agile. Our suggestion is that these errors are often avoidable but too often have to be accepted as a normal part of the agile process. Making an effort to thoroughly understand the necessary steps needed for an agile transformation and taking into account the complexity of such a change will help your company complete its journey successfully—and with minimal time wasted.
