    Delhi government has extended its anti-Open-Burning campaign till June 13, said Environment Minister Gopal Rai who ordered the extension of the campaign for the next one month from May 13 to June 13 on Thursday. The Environment Department has also released last month reports related to the anti-Open Burning campaign. Divulging more details on the report, Rai said, ''Today is the last day of the first phase of the anti-Open Burning campaign launched under the Summer Action Plan. In view of the cases of open burning in Delhi, instructions have also been issued to extend the anti-Open Burning campaign from May 13 to June 13.''

    OPEC lowers global economic, oil demand forecasts

    The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Thursday revised its forecasts for this year's global economic growth and oil demand, citing COVID-19-induced restrictions and geopolitical tensions. The oil alliance said in its monthly oil market report that the world economy is expected to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2022, compared to its forecast of 3.9 per cent a month ago. OPEC said notable challenges facing the global economy include "geopolitical tensions, the continued pandemic, rising inflation, aggravated supply chain issues, high sovereign debt levels in many regions and expected monetary tightening by central banks in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and the euro area."

    US producer prices up 11 pc in year to April, adds to inflation woes

    US producer prices, a measure of what retailers pay for goods at the wholesale level, rose 11 per cent in the year to April, the Labor Department said on Thursday in the latest data that showed little let-up in inflation pressure. "On an unadjusted basis, final demand prices moved up 11 per cent for the 12 months ended in April," the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a unit within the Labor Department, said in its monthly reading of the Producer Price Index, or PPI.

    L&T net profit rises 10 pc to Rs 3,621 crore in Q4

    Larsen & Toubro on Thursday reported a 10 per cent growth in its consolidated net profit at Rs 3,620.69 crore for the quarter ended March, 2022. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 3,292.81 crore in the year-ago period, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said. The consolidated income during the quarter under review rose to Rs 53,366.26 crore from Rs 49,116.16 crore in the year-ago period. "The consolidated net profit after tax for the quarter ended March 31, 2022 at Rs 3,621 crore registered a growth of 10 per cent over the corresponding quarter of the previous year, in line with revenue growth," the company said in a statement.

    India successfully test-fires extended-range version of BrahMos missile from Sukhoi

    India on Thursday successfully test-fired an extended range version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a Sukhoi fighter jet, in a boost to the country's strategic strike capability. It was the first launch of the extended range version of the BrahMos missile from a Su-30MKI aircraft and the weapon hit the designated target in the Bay of Bengal, the defence ministry said. The range of the advanced version of the missile is learnt to have been extended to over 350 km from the original 290 km.

    IndiGo airline has partnered with Air France-KLM in a codeshare agreement that will offer Air France-KLM customers access to 30 destinations in India and IndiGo customers will get access to 120 destinations in Europe and 50 destinations in America. A statement released by IndiGo mentioned that with the lifting of the Air Bubble Agreement in India and the necessary governmental approval, Air France-KLM and IndiGo, have implemented the extensive codeshare agreement announced in December 2021. With this partnership, Air France and KLM will ultimately offer their customers access to 30 new Indian destinations and a large number of round-trip combinations for both business and leisure purposes, it read.

    Rupee slumps to all-time low of 77.50 as high inflation triggers rate hike fears

    The rupee plunged by 25 paise to close at its lifetime low of 77.50 against the US currency on Thursday as the dollar touched a fresh two-decade high in global markets on strong risk-averse sentiment and a higher-than-expected US inflation triggered fears of aggressive rate hikes. The local currency also touched its record intra-day low of 77.63 to a dollar as losses in domestic stocks, concerns over weak growth, and persistent forex outflows negated the impact of a fall in crude oil prices. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened steeply lower at 77.52 against the greenback and moved in a range of 77.36 to 77.63 in the day trade.

    Exim Bank profit jumps nearly 3-fold to Rs 738 cr in FY22

    Export Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) on Thursday reported a nearly three-fold jump in its profit after tax (PAT) to Rs 738 crore in the fiscal ended in March 2022 compared to Rs 254 crore in the year-ago period. The development finance institution sanctioned loans aggregating to Rs 68,863 crore under various lending programmes during FY2022. Its net loan portfolio registered a growth of 13.26 per cent to Rs 1,17,619 crore from Rs 1,03,851 crore last year.

The 73-year-old United National Party (UNP) was appointed as the prime minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after they held closed-door discussions on Wednesday. Wickremesinghe, who has served as the country's prime minister for four times, was in October 2018 fired from the post of prime minister by then President Maithripala Sirisena. However, he was reinstalled as the prime minister by Sirisena after two months.

    Steps taken by RBI and govt to cut duration of high inflation: Finmin report

    The finance ministry on Thursday said measures taken by the RBI and government will squeeze the duration of high inflation fuelled by global factors. Retail inflation has been trending above Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level of 6 per cent for the past three months. "While inflation is expected to be elevated in 2022-23, mitigating action taken by the government and RBI may reduce its duration. Evidence on consumption patterns further suggests that inflation in India has a lesser impact on low-income strata than on high-income groups," the finance ministry's monthly economic review said.

    Gold jumps Rs 241; silver declines by Rs 729

    Gold in the national capital on Thursday jumped Rs 241 to Rs 50,797 per 10 grams, supported by a sharp fall in rupee, according to HDFC Securities. The precious metal had ended at Rs 50,556 per 10 grams in the previous trade. In contrast, silver declined by Rs 729 to Rs 60,158 per kg from Rs 60,887 per kg in the previous trade. Snapping its two-day winning streak, the rupee slumped by 15 paise to end at 77.40 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday.

    Homegrown auto major Tata Motors on Thursday reported narrowing of consolidated net loss at Rs 992.05 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 2022. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 7,585.34 crore in the same period last fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Its total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 78,439.06 crore in the fourth quarter as against Rs 88,627.90 crore in the year-ago period, it added.

    Karnataka HC stays Centre's notification on higher fee and penalty on aged vehicles

    The High Court of Karnataka has stayed a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways increasing the fee and penalty on vehicles that are more than 15-years-old. The enhanced fee came into effect from April one this year. The Ministry issued the notification on October 4 last year. In 2017, the High Court had quashed a similar notification issued by the Union Government earlier.

    SoftBank Group Corp reported on Thursday a record loss of $26.2 billion at its Vision Fund unit as the value of its tech portfolio slid.     Ukraine reports more airstrikes on Azovstal

    Ukraine's military says Russian forces are continuing airstrikes on the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol and pressing their advance on towns in eastern Ukraine. In its operational statement for Day 78 of the war, the Ukrainian military's General Staff says Russian forces have also fired artillery and grenade launchers at Ukrainian troops in the direction of Zaporizhzhia, which has been a refuge for civilians fleeing Mariupol.

    JSW Infra commissions Rs 1,300-cr Paradip East Quay coal terminal

    JSW Infrastructure has started commercial operations at the Paradip East Quay coal terminal in Odisha, developed at an investment of around Rs 1,300 crore. The fully-mechanised terminal at Paradip Port has an annual handling capacity of 30 million tonnes. Built as a cape compliant terminal, it can handle capesize vessels once the dredging at the port is completed. The terminal has the capacity to unload 25 rakes per day and can load two vessels simultaneously, the Sajjan Jindal-led company said in a statement on Thursday.

    Ukraine to hold first war crimes trial

    Ukraine announced it will hold its first war crimes trial over the Russian invasion, as Moscow accused Kyiv of shelling a Russian city in the war's latest flashpoint. The conflict has devastated cities and displaced millions, with fears also growing of its broader international impact as gas supplies to Europe were disrupted by a halt in Russian flows through Ukraine. Kyiv has repeatedly accused Russian troops of committing atrocities since the invasion began on February 24, and Ukrainian authorities said Wednesday they would launch the first war crimes trial of the conflict.
