Gujarat: Govt college professor 'tortures' wife to death in Bhavnagar

A 50-year-old professor of a government college in Bhavnagar district was arrested for allegedly subjecting his wife to severe brutality for nearly five years, which ultimately led to her death.

RAJKOT: A 50-year-old professor of a government college in Bhavnagar district was arrested for allegedly subjecting his wife to severe brutality for nearly five years, which ultimately led to her death.
The professor Devji Maru, who works with a government college in Talaja town, allegedly confined his wife Hansa, 37, to the house, thrashed her regularly and kept her starving for days, which led to her health severely deteriorating.

The couple lived with their 14-year-son in Thaliya village near Talaja.
On April 29, some neighbours got to know about her health condition and asked Maru to hospitalize her. She was admitted to a private hospital in Mahuva town with severe anemia. Police said Maru allegedly took forcible discharge from the hospital on the pretext of taking her to Ahmedabad for further treatment. However, he took her home and confined her in a room and left.
Meanwhile, Hansa's four brothers, who live in Gir-Somnath district's Kodinar taluka, reached Mahuva hospital to check on her health. There they got to know from some neighbours in Mahuva that she was not taken to Ahmedabad and confined in the house.
The brothers took help of Talaja police and went to her house where they her lying unconscious. She was taken to Junagadh and admitted to a private hospital. However, Hansa died on May 12.

Police said Devji and Hansa got married 16 years ago. Then, he had started with a job of Rs 2,500 in a college in Dhasa town. He allegedly started tormenting her to get money from her father. Hansa's brother and father extended financial help and gave the couple whole's years grains and other groceries as his salary was meagre.
Later, the couple went to Surat and Maru even passed Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) exam. After getting a job in Talaja college five years ago, they shifted to Mahuva and stayed in a rented house.
However, Maru continued subjecting her to severe torture by thrashing her and keeping her starving for days. He allegedly also sold off all her gold ornaments to purchase a plot in the town.
Meanwhile, Maru got to know that her father had sold a huge tract of land in Kodinar and started pressuring her to get money to build a house. Her father gave Rs three lakh while four brothers contributed Rs 1.5 lakh each.
Maru also forced her youngest brother Raghu to work as a labourer in building his house for a year.
RD Chaudhary, police inspector, Talaja said, Maru fell in love with a college girl in 2020 and continued to torture his wife. Maru was booked for culpable homicide and other relevant sections of IPC.
