Dry Delhi appeals to Haryana to release water

Wednesday, 18 May 2022 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The Delhi Government has requested its counterpart in Haryana to release water in the almost dry Yamuna River, amid the water crisis that has gripped the national Capital.

Delhi Water Minister, Satyendar alleged that the BJP-led Haryana Government has withheld the share of water that belongs to Delhi.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has written thrice to the Haryana Irrigation Department in this connection in a fortnight and had shot off request letters on May 12, May 3 and April 30.

Jain on Tuesday conducted an on-site review of the Wazirabad barrage. He was also concerned about the impact of the water output from the Wazirabad and Chandrawal Water Treatment Plants (WTP) due to the Haryana Government’s reduced water release in the Yamuna River.

The water level at the Wazirabad barrage has dropped from its typical 674.5 feet to this year’s lowest level of 669 feet.

“Due to a lack of water supply from Haryana, the water treatment plants in Delhi are currently running at a fraction of their peak capability. As a result, Wazirabad WTP’s water production has decreased by 60-70 MGD. The Yamuna has dried up as well due to the withholding of water by the Haryana Government,” he informed

“The water supply is being impacted in several places across the city including Civil Lines, Hindurao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, Old and New Rajinder Nagar, Patel Nagar, Baljit Nagar and Indrapuri,” said Jain

“We have appealed to the Haryana Government, requesting that they come here and assess the state of the Yamuna. We are not expecting the Haryana Government to provide water in proportion to the 2022 population of Delhi, but at the very least they need to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling. Our share of water is our right,” said Jain.

Meanwhile, an official said that residents facing water shortage can contact Delhi Jal Board’s Central Control Room at 1916, 23527679, 23634469 for water tanker facilities.

“We are taking all measures necessary to meet the demand but the situation is worsening by the day due to the intense heat and Haryana releasing less water in the river,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
