Death toll increases to 3 in Tirunelveli quarry mishap

The death toll in Sunday’s rockslide at a stone quarry in Adaimithippankulam in Tirunelveli has risen to three with the NDRF rescue team recovering the decomposed body of a worker on Monday night and spotting another on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 20 active patients were in hospitals across the state for treatment. While eight of them were in oxygen beds, one patient from Kanyakumari was in the intensive care unit. Twenty districts had no admissions in hospitals.

Of the 324 active cases, Chennai had 186 patients, followed by 50 in Chengalpet, 19 in Coimbatore, 13 in Tiruvallur and 11 in Kancheepuram. Eighteen districts had between one and six active cases and 15 districts ha d no active cases. There were four active cases each from domestic and international air travel.

Chennai added 17 newc ases – one more than its tally on Monday– and it continued to be the only district to report cases in two digits. Chengalpet had five new cases for the second consecutive day, while Kancheepuram reported four new cases, Coimbatore had three and five other districts – Erode, Krishnagiri, Tiruvallur, Tuticorin and Villupuram – had one new case each. No travellers from other states or countries tested p ositive for Covid-19. Twen- ty-nine of 38 districts reported zero new cases.

Fresh cases of Covid-19 increased marginally to 34 on Tuesday from 31 on Monday and 30 on Sunday. The number of active cases however continued to drop as there were 3 24 patients under treatment for the viral infection after the state discharged 42 patients from the registry. There were 332 active cases on Monday.
