Scorched by a heatwave, northwestern parts of India can expect some respite over the three days as an extra-tropical weather system is likely to bring showers over the region with peak intensity rains forecast for Monday.
The weather office said light to moderate rainfall was likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, while Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh were expected to experience scattered showers over the next two days.

States located in northwest and east parts of India are likely to witness wet spells from May 21 to 24, with peak intensity on May 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.
“Under the influence of current western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels with a trough aloft in middle tropospheric levels, and a fresh approaching western disturbance and an east-west trough from northwest Rajasthan to east Assam in lower tropospheric levels, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Jammu& Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand; scattered rainfall activity over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and isolated rainfall activity over Rajasthan during 21st-24th with peak rainfall intensity on 23rd May, 2022,” the Met Department said.
After two days of poor to very poor Air Quality Index in Mumbai, the pollution levels dropped on Saturday morning. The system of Air Quality Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) recorded an AQI of 197, which falls in the moderate category, a drop from 309 and 286 AQIs on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
According to SAFAR’s forecast, the AQI is likely to remain in the moderate category for the next two days. “AQI of Mumbai indicates ‘upper end of moderate’ and likely to be within ‘moderate’ for the next 2 days,” SAFAR said. Read more
Appealing to the people, especially youngsters, to become active agents to improve the air quality by adopting sustainable lifestyles, appropriate behaviour and attitude, Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav stressed that "Jan Bhagidari" or participative governance held the key to ensure "clean air for all." Emphasising that it's time to make "clean air for all" a participative mission, the Minister said the air quality improvement efforts have shown positive trends in achievement of better air quality in cities across the country.
"But if we wish to achieve what we aspire, then, 'Jan Bhagidari' or participative governance holds the key,” he said while inaugurating a sensitisation-cum-review workshop – National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and XV-FC Million Plus Cities Challenge Fund (XV-FC MPCCF) of the southern region here.

As many as 33 have people died in 16 districts of Bihar due to gale storms, lightning and heavy rains. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday announced financial aid of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the people who lost their lives in the hailstorm. The CM’s office said that after assessing crop and house damage, instructions will be given to provide assistance to the affected families.
Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning have hit several districts of Bihar since the afternoon of May 19, leaving a trail of destruction, including uprooted trees, which have obstructed roads and damaged electric poles, interrupted vehicular travel and power supply. Read more
Light rainfall, strong winds and a dust storm or thunderstorm could occur over parts of south and southeast Delhi, and parts of the NCR, including Gurgaon, Faridabad and Manesar, on Saturday morning, according to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update at around 9 am, issued for the subsequent two hours.
The maximum temperature on Saturday could fall below 40 degrees Celsius and settle at 39 degrees, going by the IMD forecast. Dust storms or thunderstorms remain on the forecast for Saturday, after parts of Delhi witnessed strong winds, rainfall and lightning on Friday evening. In the past 24 hours, the Safdarjung weather station recorded 0.8 mm of rainfall, while the weather station at Palam recorded 2.4 mm. A thunderstorm or dust storm along with light to moderate rainfall and strong winds of about 30 to 40 kmph would occur over parts of west, northwest, northeast, southwest, central, east Delhi and the NCR, including Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Noida and Gurgaon, over the next two hours, the IMD said in an update a little after 6.30 pm.

The India Meteorological Department on Friday issued a "yellow alert" forecasting isolated heavy rainfall in nine districts of Kerala for the day as the southern state continued to receive good showers.
The 'yellow alert' was issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.
A 'yellow alert' means heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 cm. "Heavy (7–11 cm in 24 hours) rain is very likely at one or two places over Kerala from 20th May to 22nd May," according to the IMD. Thunderstorms, along with lightning, are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala and Lakshadweep for two days from today, it added. (PTI)
Odisha experienced pleasant weather in many areas on Thursday as overcast skies and moderate rain overnight brought the temperatures down, the Met office said.
The mercury fell by around 2-4 degrees at some places, but the humidity was over 75 per cent in several parts, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said.
Only three towns, as compared to nine the previous day, recorded a maximum temperature of over 40 degree Celsius. Moderate rainfall was witnessed in several districts, including Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Subarnapur and Malkangiri, a bulletin stated.
Boudh recorded 42 degree Celsius, the highest in the state, followed by 41 degree in Malkangiri and 40 degree in Sundargarh. The mercury in the capital Bhubaneswar settled at 34 degrees Celsius, while in Cuttack it was 34.8. (PTI)
Delhiites on Friday woke up to a warm morning with the minimum temperature settling two notches above normal at 28.2 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office has predicted a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of development of thunder and lightning. The maximum temperature in the capital is likely to soar to 44 degrees celsius at the Safdarjung Observatory, the IMD said.
Delhi had recorded a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees Celsius, the highest this year so far, on Sunday. (PTI)
Severe heatwave conditions are predicted in parts of Rajasthan today. Heatwave conditions continued in most parts of the state on Thursday with many places registering temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. Barmer and Dholpur were recorded as the hottest places in the state, recording over 47 degrees Celsius temperatures.
Heavy showers are predicted in Kerala and coastal Karnataka today, the IMD said in its daily weather bulletin. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal are also expected to receive some rain today, according to the weather department.
After an early arrival over Andaman & Nicobar islands, south-west monsoon is racing towards the mainland with the weather office forecasting onset over Kerala by the middle of next week.
“Conditions will continue to be favourable for further progress leading to onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala towards end of the week,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday evening.
If the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala happens this weekend, it will be the earliest onset in recent years. Monsoon had reached Kerala on May 23 in 2009. Earlier, the weather office had forecast the onset of monsoon over Kerala by May 27, five days ahead of the normal onset date of June 1.
“Due to strong westerly flow from Arabian Sea and trough over south Peninsula India, light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity likely over southwest Peninsular India and isolated to scattered rainfall over rest peninsular India,” the weather office said. It said isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Kerala, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka during many days of the week. (PTI)
Heavy downpour continued to wreak havoc in various parts of Karnataka including Bengaluru for the third day leading to declaration of holiday for schools in some regions.
Normal life was thrown out of gear in several parts of the State since Tuesday with the pounding rains. In view of heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada district for the second day, deputy commissioner K V Rajendra declared a holiday to all government, aided, unaided primary and high schools.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner M Kurma Rao also instructed schools to take decisions on holiday as heavy rains are continuing in the twin coastal districts. In the state capital, there was no respite from rains today as the downpour continued for the third consecutive day. (PTI)
