Bhubaneswar: After registering a case of murder, police on Friday began a probe into the death of a Class XII student of a private residential science college in Balasore. The minor reportedly fell off her hostel building on Wednesday night and died the next day.
Blaming the college authorities for the incident, the deceased’s family alleged that she had faced ragging by her hostel roommates.
The girl’s mother, Padmavati Behera, alleged that the hostel in-charge and her daughter’s roommates should be arrested.
“My daughter was murdered. I hope police will give us justice,” she added. The deceased, a native of Luhakani under Bisoi block in Mayurbhanj district, had called her parents on Wednesday night and told them about a dispute that took place in her hostel after a roommate lost Rs 200. She had told her parents that her roommates suspected her of stealing the money. After a few hours, she fell off the hostel’s third floor. Soon she was rushed to a Balasore hospital and shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, on Thursday morning. She succumbed to her injuries after a few hours of admission.
Balasore sub-divisional police officer Padarbinda Tripathy said nobody has been detained or arrested in the case so far. “We are yet to get the post-mortem report of the deceased. Our team is probing the matter from all angles. The exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained,” he added.
