Record-high temperatures tied, broken during East Coast heat wave

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — This weekend’s weather broke or tied temperature records at numerous locations throughout the East Coast Saturday during a sweltering heat wave that brought summer-like weather, the National Weather Service said.

Richmond, Va., and Georgetown, Del., reached a stifling 95 degrees, shattering previously records for May 21 that were set in 1966, according to the National Weather Service’s Eastern Region office. Philadelphia, Pa., also hit 95 degrees, which tied the city’s May 21 record established in 1934.

Islip, in Long Island, tied its 1996 record at 90 degrees, the agency said, while Atlantic City, N.J. also tied its 1996 record by reaching an oppressive 93 degrees.

Other areas in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maryland and Delaware either tied or surpassed previous temperature records, the National Weather Service said. New York City did not officially surpass any records for May 21.

All data is considered preliminary until it is reviewed by the National Centers for Environmental Information.
