Ludhiana:
Punjab sports minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Wednesday visited
Thomas Cup winner city shuttler
Dhruv Kapila to congratulate him on behalf of chief minister
Bhagwant Mann.
The minister said: “This historic victory of Dhruv’s Indian team in badminton’s premier championship has made the Punjabis proud as well and his achievement will inspire the budding players.
Dhruv is a true role model and CM Bhagwant Mann will also visit him.”
Claiming that a “flawed sports policy” had caused Punjab’s over performance in games to “decline at the national level”, the minister rued why giving away cash incentives to the winners of international tournaments such as Thomas Cup was not covered in that document.
He said the new state government will “amend the Punjab sports policy to fix its flaws”. Hayer said: “The previous state governments built stadiums across Punjab but failed to develop playgrounds. They overlooked how our athletes struggled for basic kits. Bhagwant Mann’s Punjab government will do sports development from the grassroots level to help the state regain its lost glory.”
The sports minister also congratulated Dhruv’s parents, Gagan Kapila and Shivani Kapila, and his coach, Anand Tiwari. Dhruv Kapila presented Hayer with one of his badminton rackets as a souvenir.
