Patna: An SUV carrying liquor deliberately crushed an assistant sub-inspector (
ASI) of police to death when he tried to stop the vehicle near
Tikri village under the
Hussainganj police station area in Siwan district around 3am on Thursday.
The slain ASI has been identified as
Surendra Kumar Gahlot (50) from Nalanda district. Eyewitnesses said the speeding vehicle mowed down the ASI despite knowing that it was a ‘naka’.
A police team was deployed at the spot to check vehicles.
Seeing an SUV coming at a high speed, the ASI got down from his vehicle with a chowkidar, Babudhan Manjhi, and signalled the driver to stop. The vehicle, however, did not stop and ran over Gahlot while hitting chowkidar, who suffered injury to his leg.
The speeding SUV rammed into a tree and overturned on the roadside near Sidhwal village, about 1km from Parshuram Mor. Police later seized the vehicle and recovered 40 litres of liquor from it.
SHO of Hussainganj police station
Ram Balak Yadav said the police team was sent to Tikri village for night patrolling to nab the liquor smugglers. “We got an information around 11pm on Wednesday about a vehicle carrying huge consignment of liquor. To nab the smugglers, a police team was sent to Tikri. Around 3am, a liquor-laden vehicle reached Tikri and ran over the ASI. He died on way to hospital. Chowkidar Manjhi has been undergoing treatment at a local hospital,” Yadav said.
Gahlot was posted as an ASI at Hussainganj police station for last two years. He was a resident of Dumri village under the Rajgir police station area in Nalanda. The ASI’s body was handed over to his family members after an autopsy.
