I’m a gardening guru and these are the top six plants for shady and dark rooms

NOT EVERYONE is blessed with the green fingers that are necessary to keep houseplants alive.

But sometimes it's got more to do with your home than your skills.

Cindy from Houseplant Help revealed some of the best plants to keep if your home is naturally the more shady side.

She said: "I live in a very dark house, with no south-facing windows and not much light to work with.

"This has made it challenging to grow houseplants, but that hasn’t stopped me. I have a huge, thriving indoor garden, and I’ve become an expert on the best indoor plants for dark rooms."

This plant, which is also known as Aglaonema, is the perfect choice for a house plant that doesn't need much light.

The gardening pro said: " It is a true low light plant, It thrives in a dark corner, as long as it receives a little indirect light for part of the day."

Snake plant

Another plant that well known for thriving in low light, this plant can survive almost anything.

Cindy says: " It needs occasional watering, and won’t mind too much if you forget for a few days (or even weeks).

"It likes dry air, so you don’t have to worry about maintaining humidity, and requires only infrequent feeding."

ZZ plant

This plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is also great for the shady corners of your home.

In fact Cindy notes that you've probably seen it in places like hotel lobbies and dingy office buildings that don't get much light.

"A great choice for beginners and anyone with a dark room in need of plants," Cindy says.

Peace Lily

It's no secret that this plant is one of the easier options when it comes to growing plants at home.

It's also "one of the only flowering plants that con tolerate low light," according the the plant pro.

She explains: "They will put up with erratic watering schedules and don’t need a great deal of sunlight."

Birds nest fern

"Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) needs little care aside from moderate moisture and monthly feedings with diluted fertilizer," Cindy says.

It's bright green leaves can help brighten up any room even if the sun doesn't shine in there.

English ivy

English ivy is a great choice for corners of your home that don't get much light, and looks great in a hanging basket on the top of shelves.

Cindy says: "Non-variegated types of English Ivy (Hedera helix) do well in lower light.

"Variegated types will lose their pattern if they don’t get enough bright light, but they will still survive."
