Two Shrimp Farm Workers Arrested In Ramanathapuram Rape & Murder Case

Chennai: Two north Indian labourers of a shrimp farm were arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a fisherwoman in Ramanathapuram on Friday. The two workers were arrested after police detained and quizzed six including the two workers of the shrimp farm on Thursday.

The two arrested persons were identified as Prakash (22) and Ranjan Rana (34) of Odisha, said a report on The New Indian Express.

The police said, the duo waylaid the woman and attacked her. They raped her, stole the gold jewelry and set her ablaze. The two accused then went to a shop nearby and sold some of her gold jewels. 

Following this, the police on Friday took the accused to the crime scene and collected evidence from the shop.

It all started on Tuesday when a 50-year-old woman resident who went to collect seaweeds went missing in Vadakadu of Ramanathapuram. Soon, her family members gave a missing person complaint and during the search, police recovered a half-burnt body of a woman. Later, the husband identified the body and the police also recovered some of her belongings at the farm. 

On Wednesday, after the rape and murder came to light, Vadakadu villagers staged a protest and gathered in front of Rameshwaram Taluk office demanding justice. They also demanded to take action against the illegal private shrimp farms.

On Friday, the fisherman associations also met in order to demand for the protection of the fisherwoman and to bring a legislation for the safety of the fishermen.
