NAGPUR: A state reserve police force (SRPF) jawan sprayed bullets on his colleague and then turned the gun on himself at Marpally armed outpost in Aheri taluka of Maoist-affected Gadchiroli on Wednesday. Part of the Daund’s SRPF group I in Pune, both died.
Shrikant Berad allegedly fired at Bandu Naothar from close quarters with an Insas firearm following a heated argument.
After Naothar collapsed, Berad placed the firearm at his chin and pressed the trigger.
Police sources said Naothar sustained three bullet injuries. It's still not clear how many shots were fired as the cops are collecting empty cases from the spot.
According to a senior police official, the reason behind the dispute between the two is still unclear. “Other jawans will be quizzed regarding the incident. We will record statements of the eye-witnesses,” he said.
The Gadchiroli police have shifted the bodies from Marpally to the district general hospital where the post-mortem was underway when reports last came in.
The offence will be registered at Jimulgatta police station and the case is likely to be probed by an officer of sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) rank.
The group had come to Marpally in February this year. SRPF is deployed in Gadchiroli for assisting the local district police and the central paramilitary forces.
