Police in Karnataka on Saturday arrested a 26-year-man on charges of killing his mother for not buying him a mobile phone. The arrested person has been identified as Deepak, a resident of Lucas Layout in Mylasandra. (IANS)

The Karnataka high court has refused a petition seeking to quash the case of bigamy filed against a 76-year-old man who admitted that he is still married to three women. The HC said his admission makes it a "continuing offence". "In the teeth of the admitted facts of the petitioner marrying thrice and its subsistence even as on day, the plea of delay in registration of the crime would pale into insignificance, as bigamy in the case at hand is a continuing offence," it said.

Karnataka's historical town Srirangapatna has turned into a police fortress on Saturday against the backdrop of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) "Srirangapatna Chalo" call to chant Hanuman Chalisa in Jamia Masjid.

Karnataka state government has announced the dissolution of the state textbook review committee. The move comes amid a controversy over textbook revisions. Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said that the committee has been disbanded since its designated work had concluded. Bommai emphasized that the government is open to further revision in case of any objectionable content. Several seers and prominent personalities had objected to a move by the state government to revise a chapter on the 12th-century reformist Basavanna.

Seven members of an extended family, including two children, were charred to death and 27 others injured when their bus overturned and caught fire after colliding with a goods van at Kamalapur, 35 km from here, on Friday morning. The deceased are from Hyderabad and were returning after a holiday in Goa. The deceased are Saraladevi Arjun Gudur, 37, Arjun MGudur, 37, Vivan Arjun Gudur, 2, Shivakumar K , 35, Ravali Shivakumar, 35, Dixita Shivakumar, 9 and Anita Raju, 40. The bus was carrying 32 passengers, including 30 from the same extended family.
