    12 people killed, 21 injured in explosion at factory in Hapur

    At least 12 workers died and 21 were injured when a boiler exploded at a factory in western Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district on Saturday afternoon, officials said. There were around 30 people in the affected area at the factory in the UPSIDC industrial area in Dholana, around 80 km from the national capital, when the incident occurred, they said. The impact of the explosion was so intense that the roofs of some of the factories located in the vicinity were damaged. It took three hours for fire tenders to douse the blaze.

    Indian sprinter S Dhanalakshmi clocked her personal best time of 11.26 seconds to win the 100m race at the Erzurum Sprint International Cup in Turkey while Hima Das was second with a timing of 11.59s. Dhanalakshmi's effort was better than the standard prescribed by Athletics Federation of India for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. In the 200m also, Dhanalakshmi won with a time of 23.26 while Hima clocked 23.51 to finish second.

    Wildfire rages near Athens, damaging homes

    A wildfire raged out of control on the outskirts of Athens on Saturday, damaging houses and cars, the Fire Department said. Fanned by strong winds, the blaze quickly spread across the slopes of Mount Hymettus which overlooks the Greek capital, sending thick clouds of smoke over the southern suburbs. As a precaution, civil protection authorities evacuated some parts of the Voula and Glyfada regions about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Athens centre. A Reuters witness saw at least two houses severely damaged by the fire.

A health department bulletin said 49 people recuperated from the infection and the cumulative number of recoveries till date was 7,88,886. The recovery rate was 99.42 per cent.

    Two juveniles were apprehended on Saturday in the gang-rape of a teenage girl here, police said. As one of the teenage boys accused in the incident is alleged to be a son of a leader wielding power, the opposition BJP and Congress stepped up their demand for a CBI probe. The political heat was apparent with the BJP alleging that the police acted only after TRS leader and Information Technology Minister KT Rama Rao said none would be spared and Youth Congress activists staged a protest in front of the DGP office here over the 'delay' in police action.     Fire breaks out at hospital in east Delhi, no casualties reported

    A fire broke out on Saturday evening in a hospital in east Delhi's Pushpanjali Enclave area, officials said. No casualty has been reported till now, they said. The fire department stated that the information regarding the blaze was received at 4.44 pm, following which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

    Iran says tankers seized because Greece 'stole' oil

    Iran's supreme leader on Saturday said that the country's seizure of two Greek oil tankers late last month was a retaliation against Greece because it "stole" Iranian oil.
    The Revolutionary Guards boarded and took control of the two vessels in the Gulf on May 27, citing "violations", which Greece condemned as "tantamount to acts of piracy". The seizure came two days after Greece confirmed it would send 115,000 tonnes of Iranian oil from a Russian-flagged tanker, seized in April, to the United States at the request of the US Treasury and in line with the latter's sanctions regime.

    One in every 36 infants still dies before first birthday in India: Data

    • The present level of IMR (28 infant deaths per thousand live births, for the year 2020) is less than one-fourth as compared to 1971 (129 infant deaths per thousand live births).
    • In the last 10 years, the IMR has witnessed a decline of about 36 per cent and the IMR at the all-India level has declined from 44 to 28 in the last decade.
    • The corresponding decline in rural areas is 48 to 31, and for urban areas it is from 29 to 19, thereby exhibiting about 35 per cent and 34 per cent decadal decline respectively.
    • In 2020, the maximum IMR has been reported for Madhya Pradesh (43) and the minimum for Mizoram (3).
    • The birth rate at the all-India level has declined drastically over the last five decades from 36.9 in 1971 to 19.5 in 2020.
