HYDERABAD: While monsoon has finally hit the state, a quick analysis of the recent summer season shows how climate change led to an increase in number of extremely hot days — with temperatures above 40 degree Celsius — in Telangana. While Hyderabad was relatively cooler with very few mandals experiencing such high temperatures, the situation in some districts was severe.

Data analysed by TOI between May 1 and June 10 show that people in Adilabad’s Jainad mandal endured the most difficult summer with daily maximum temperatures there touching 40 degrees Celsius on a daily basis. In contrast, in the city, only Khairatabad mandal had a tough spell, with six extremely hot days. “Being in the Deccan plateau, Hyderabad had relatively less days of scorching heat. But over the years, the situation is changing. The number of days with high temperatures will increase further going forward,” warned Y Rama Rao, a consultant with the Indian Metrological Department (IMD).
Apart from Adilabad, mandals in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Peddapalli, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Warangal Hanumakonda, and Rajanna Sircilla districts experienced more than 30 days of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees. In fact, according to the National Climatic Data Centre (NCDC) that records temperature for 101 Indian stations, about 30 days in May saw temperatures touch — or even cross — the 40-degree- mark in Ramagundam even as Nizamabad had about 80% of extremely hot days.
In the remaining districts, this count was lower.
Like Hyderabad, the neighbouring districts of Siddipet, Ranga Reddy, and Vikarabad were also cooler. Two mandals (Chowdapur-Vikarabad and Patra-Nagarkurnool) did not have a single day when temperatures went up to 40 degrees Celsius, during the period analysed.
