Bhubaneswar: Protesters ransack Malkangiri PS over 'police excesses'

KORAPUT: Tension gripped Maoist-hit Chitrakonda in Malkangiri district on Monday after hundreds of Congress workers ransacked the police station and damaged a police vehicle during a protest against alleged police excesses in RAC-13 village.
Agitating workers of the party alleged that a team of police had raided RAC-13 village on June 7 on the suspicion of the presence of ganja traffickers.
During the raid they had deliberately attacked a few women of the village, they claimed.
"Though the villagers had approached Chitrakonda police station to complain against the police team that had attacked the women, no action has been taken so far. The villagers often face police excesses," said an agitating Congress workers.
The police said that at least 12 Congress workers have been detained for their alleged involvement in the attack and adequate force has been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. "Presently the situation is under control and the developments are being closely monitored," said DIG (south-western range) Rajesh Pandit.
Earlier in the day, a team led by Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati and several Congress leaders of Malkangiri had submitted a memorandum and held discussions with the block development officer of Chitrakonda on various developmental issues, including irrigation, roads and drinking water, in Swabhiman anchal.
