THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of the increasing incidents of speeding and accidents involving two-wheelers, the motor vehicle department (MVD) will launch a two-week long drive titled ‘Operation Race’.
Under the drive, MVD officials will book those two-wheelers that have been altered from the permitted models, those that are speeding and those that are involved in other motor vehicle rule violations.
The MVD officials will cancel the registrations of such vehicles and also would cancel the licences of the driver along with slapping a fine.
In case the vehicles which are asked to stop for checking speed away, the officials will visit the addresses in which the vehicles are registered and slap fine along with taking other legal actions. Transport minister Antony Raju had asked the department to take immediate action in the wake of increasing incidents where two-wheelers, especially high-end bikes and similar bikes that have received a facelift in violation of the motor vehicle rules, are attempting races in the public roads, when races are permitted only in specially designed tracks. In the latest incident, two youths were killed when their bikes collided during an attempted race in Mukkola near Vizhinjam in the capital.
In March this year, the MVD had conducted a drive titled ‘Operation Silence’ against alteration of vehicles and the noise pollution created by them. More than 3,500 vehicles were booked during the drive.
