Travellers at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport now have a chance to feel the past and present meet for a brief moment. An ancient tongue that is typically spoken today during Hindu rituals, Sanskrit has recently been added to the languages for COVID-19 announcements made at Varanasi’s airport. Covid norms have been read in Hindi, English and Sanskrit as of June 17.

The new move is an initiative between the Airports Authority of India and Banaras Hindu University. Listen to the announcement in the video clip below. “As soon as passengers enter the airport, they will feel they have entered the hub of Sanskrit,” reads the tweet. The initiative has received a lot of online buzz, including requests for announcements in the native Bhojpuri.
