Eight people died on the spot while nine others suffered serious injuries after a speeding pickup vehicle collided head-on with a tempo in Maudaha police station area of Hamirpur district on Wednesday evening.

Kanpur: Eight people died on the spot while nine others suffered serious injuries after a speeding pickup vehicle collided head-on with a tempo in Maudaha police station area of Hamirpur district on Wednesday evening. The condition of two injured was reported to be critical and they have been referred to Kanpur. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the death of the eight people.
He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
CM has instructed the authorities to provide proper treatment to those injured in the mishap. According to police, the incident took place near Makaraon village under Maudaha police station when a speeding pickup vehicle loaded with mangoes collided head-on with an auto on the National Highway-34. The locals started rescue operation after alerting police.
Eight people died, while nine others sustained serious injuries. All the injured were admitted to Maudaha Community Health Centre from where few were shifted to the district hospital. Later, two of them were referred to Kanpur.
Police rushed the injured to hospitals in private vehicles and an ambulance of the Highway Authority. The dead include Shyambabu (35), his wife Mamta (30), their two minor daughters Ragini (15) and Dipanjali (7), auto driver Rajesh Verma (26), one Pancha (50), Vijay (26) and Rajulia (45), said Circle Officer Vivek Yadav.
Police said the tempo ferrying more than a dozen people was heading towards Maudaha from Sumerpur when it was hit by a pick-up loader coming from the opposite direction. “Two among the injured, identified as Priyanka and Rajkumari have been referred to Kanpur,” said police officials.
