New cases spike to 5-month high, active cases cross 600
Nagpur: New Covid cases rose to a five-month high at 197 on Wednesday following a spurt in all districts — especially Nagpur — of Vidarbha region. The jump comes right after a day when the region reported just 47 cases, with two districts not recording any new case. After dropping to 18 on Wednesday, cases in Nagpur spiralled to 95 on Thursday.
The spike took the active caseload to 665 in Vidarbha.
Nagpur alone has an active case tally of 350. Caseload of other districts too has increased after slightly coming down in the last few days.
After Nagpur, it was Akola which sprang a surprise of 27 cases from 184 tests. Akola district had been reporting fewer cases recently. The jump in cases there is worrying as the district has one of the lowest vaccination levels in the state.
Buldhana too reported 12 cases after no new positive sample was detected a day before. Chandrapur and Gadchiroli’s graph is constant but they haven’t seen a drop for some time.
However, there still are no reports of patients needing hospitalisation or oxygen support. Only a fraction of the active cases are in hospitals. The admitted patients have multiple complications in addition to Covid.
It is the first time after February 20 that the region’s new cases rose to this level. On February 20, Vidarbha had recorded 185 cases, including three deaths and over 700 recoveries. The active cases then were over 2,700. Those cases were recorded from over 10,000 tests.
There wasn’t a major increase in the number of tests in the day as over 6,500 tests were done. So far this month, the average daily tests have been around 5,500 in the region.
As against the new cases, 90 recoveries took place in all the districts.
