Andhra Pradesh renames Konaseema district after Dr. BR Ambedkar

AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh government decided to rename Konaseema district Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district on Friday, a month after the district was rocked by violence in protest of the proposal.

The state Cabinet meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, approved the gazette notification renaming the district on May 18.

Police have heightened security throughout the district, particularly at the district headquarters in Amalapuram, which saw mob violence against the government's move on May 24. The violence injured dozens of people, including 25 police officers.

Protesters opposing the renaming of the district set fire to the homes of state minister P. Viswaroop and MLA P. Satish, and also a few police and private vehicles.

In light of the Cabinet decision, police have put in place elaborate security measures to prevent any protests. To prevent any untoward incidents, additional forces were deployed in the town and other parts of the district.
