Four fire tenders brought the blaze under control
NOIDA: Thirteen people, including four children, had a close shave as a fire broke out from a lamp at a three-storey house in Sector 20, Noida, on Friday morning. Fire officials braved the blaze to get into the house and rescued them and their dog. However, two firemen suffered medical complications due to the thick smoke and high temperatures.
According to chief fire officer (Gautam Budh Nagar) Arun Kumar Singh, the fire broke out around 10.20 am in the D block of Sector 20 in the house, which belongs to a doctor.
“As soon as we received a call about the fire, two fire tenders rushed to the spot and two more reached there later. There was thick black smoke in the area,” Singh said.
The fire, he added, broke out on the first floor from a lamp, which the residents had lit for 'puja'. It spread rapidly because of PVC panelling, false ceiling and foam in the furniture. When the fire officials started to fight the fire, they found out that the doctor had moved outside from the ground floor before the fire could reach him, but his family and staff remained stuck on the first and second floors of the house. The family included his two-year-old granddaughter, three other children, and a pet dog.
“It was difficult to climb the staircase because of the thick smoke. However, fire personnel entered the house using the staircase, wearing breathing operator sets. They rescued the people stuck on the two floors and safely transferred them from their terrace to their neighbour's terrace, using a ladder,” Singh said.
Two firemen, Mahipal Singh and Nizamuddin, fell sick during the rescue. "They were rushed to the Sector 26 Apollo Hospital, and joint commissioner of police Love Kumar visited them to check up on their health," the CFO said.
Later, the commissioner of police Alok Singh announced an award of Rs 50,000 for the team. He has also recommended the team for the DG’s commendation medal this year.
The district has reported 626 fire incidents from January to April 31 this year.
Singh said the department usually gets maximum such cases in April and May because of the heat and the short circuit of electrical connections.
