Kanpur: UP will give a ground breaking welcome to the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay to commence in Meerut on June 26.
The Torch Relay, which had begun from New Delhi and given to the first Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a grand function recently, will pass from 9 districts of UP, said Sanjay Kapoor, president of All India Chess Federation.

Talking to TOI, he said the relay would cover four districts on June 26. From Meerut, it would visit Agra, then Kanpur and later in the evening in Lucknow. In Kanpur, the relay would arrive around 3 pm and reach the Green Park International Stadium. Around 2000 sportspersons and officials will welcome the Torch Relay.
After a brief stay, the Torch Relay will leave for Lucknow where it will be given a warm welcome at the Assembly by chief minister Yogi Adityanath and others.
As per the programme, on June 27, the Torch Relay will cover Prayagraj and Varanasi and on June 28 reach Ayodhya and Gorakhpur and Jhansi on July 5. It will reach Chennai on July 28 when the Olympiad will be inaugurated, Sanjay Kapoor said.
He said he himself would supervise the welcome functions at Kanpur and Lucknow. Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand is likely to welcome the relay in Lucknow, he added.
