Active Covid cases cross 2,000 in Gujarat; 50% from Ahmedabad

With 380 new Covid cases, Gujarat's active cases tally crossed 2,000 at 2,098 on Friday, highest since February 27. Out of the total, 1,009 or nearly half are in Ahmedabad alone. Analysis of the active cases indicate the cases doubling in nine days from 991 on June 15.

AHMEDABAD: With 380 new Covid cases, Gujarat's active cases tally crossed 2,000 at 2,098 on Friday, highest since February 27. Out of the total, 1,009 or nearly half are in Ahmedabad alone. Analysis of the active cases indicate the cases doubling in nine days from 991 on June 15.
With the update, Gujarat became the 10th Indian state to have 2,000 or more active Covid cases.
Among the 10 states, Gujarat is ranked 5th in terms of rise in the weekly Covid cases.
Based on the data on public Covid data aggregator, two states - Tamil Nadu and West Bengal - doubled their active cases in the past seven days, whereas Telangana and Uttar Pradesh recorded 88% and 85% rise. Gujarat came fifth with a 75% spike in active cases in the past seven days.
Among Gujarat districts, three - Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara - have more than 200 active cases. Apart from Ahmedabad's 1,009, Surat had 372 and Vadodara 232 active cases. While the overall test positivity rate (TPR) of Gujarat is around 1%, districts like Ahmedabad have much higher TPR at 6.2%. Experts pointed out that higher cases in urban areas are responsible for 85%-plus cases getting reported from six major cities of the state.

Daily Covid cases drop by 15%
Ahmedabad: The city on Friday recorded 155 new Covid cases, which was 15% drop compared to 182 on Thursday. Gujarat also recorded 9% drop in cases from 416 to 380.
Active cases in Gujarat reached 2,098 on Friday, of which half were from Ahmedabad.
Other cases in Gujarat included 59 from Surat city, 34 from Vadodara city, 16 from Navsari, 15 from Surat, 11 from Valsad, and 9 from Bhavnagar city. With the update, only 7 out of 33 districts in Gujarat have zero active cases. Out of total active cases, 3 were on ventilator.
Gujarat in 24 hours vaccinated 7,149 persons for the first dose and 22,132 for the second. In all, 5.4 crore are administered first and 5.31 crore second dose of Covid vaccine. The state administered booster doses to 30,303 persons, taking total to 39.27 lakh.
Experts said that hospitalization in the city, and state at large, has remained low, and this month three deaths of the Covid patients have been recorded, which indicate relatively less mortality rate compared to three waves of the pandemic so far.
