HYDERABAD: For 36 year old Abhishek Trivedi, sudden onset of symptoms like lack of coordination and total blackouts while he was still in college changed his life overnight.
While this made him walk like a drunkard he ran a battery of tests and consulted several doctors before he was diagnosed as a multiple sclerosis (MS) patient. First detected in 2005, in the next two years he was put on high dose of steroids which brought his life to normal for a few years.
However, in 2014 he had a major relapse and he kept on receding and is now wheelchair bound.
“I was completely engulfed in a shame and stopped talking to friends or communicating with anyone. Infact every MS patient I meet is struggling with the same. They are ashamed of themselves. I think the first thing we have to deal with is to win over our mind,” said Trivedi who has finally managed to conquer the overwhelming feeling of shame and has set out on a trip across the country to raise awareness about the disease.
Trivedi was in Hyderabad on Friday and Saturday to interact with a group of MS patients and neurologists in the city. He is travelling from Chandigarh to Kanyakumari in his automatic car (driving with the help of his wife Richa Gupta) to spread the message of hope to patients like him. He has covered more than 12 states so far and is travelling onward to Bangalore. “The problem with MS is that most of its symptoms overlap with other issues which makes diagnosis very difficult. Infact patients take years to get the proper diagnosis,” he added.
The symptoms overlap with symptoms of nerve damage, Parkinson’ s disease, lyme disease and Guillain-Barre Syndrome among others.
