NEW DELHI: Two jailed gangsters were arrested from Tihar for trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from a businessman in Ghazipur Dairy Farm on Saturday. The accused, Aas Mohammad alias Aashu Khan and Danish alias Tiggi, are members of the Hashim Baba gang.
"On June 10, the victim had received a WhatsApp audio call from an international number. The caller threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to pay Rs 50 lakh.
The victim thought it was a prank call. On June 13, he received another call and reported the matter to the police," an officer said.
During the inquiry, police came to know that the call was made from jail number eight of Tihar. "We arrested Khan and during the inquiry, he revealed the name of Danish. Later he was nabbed from the same jail," deputy commissioner of police (east) Priyanka Kashyap said.
While Khan, lodged in jail since 2017, has been involved in 31 criminal cases, including murder, Danish was involved in six, including two murder cases. "Khan was convicted in two robbery cases. In May, he was transferred to jail number eight where he met his long-time friend Danish. To meet his legal expenses, Khan asked his friend to extort money from a potential target," the DCP said.
