MADIKERI/ MANGALURU: Mild tremors were felt in many parts of Kodagu and Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannada on Saturday morning. Residents of Sullia said they heard a loud sound and the earth shook for about 45 seconds. Several houses developed small cracks on walls.
Residents of Kodagu, DK experience mild tremorsTremors were reported in various parts of Kodagu district - at Karike, which is on the Kerala border, and in areas bordering neighbouring Dakshina Kannada district.
Residents of villages in these parts of the hilly district said they experienced tremors for more than a few seconds; the tremors reportedly left cracks on the walls of a few houses.

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the earthquake occurred a few seconds after 9am. The epicentre of the quake has been located at a distance of 4.7km northwest of Karike gram panchayat in Madikeri taluk. On the Richter Scale, the earthquake measured 2.3, while its depth was 10km.
In its note, KSNDMC said the maximum radial intensity of the quake was not more than 20km from its epicentre. The report further stated that such a mild quake does not cause significant damage.
The topography of the region being one where there is structural discontinuity, seismic activity was not that alarming, the report stated, calling on locals not to unnecessarily panic.
Karike-based activist KL Sudheer said people experienced the tremors for no longer than two seconds. "Some people said their legs shook, while a few vessels reportedly tumbled over. Some heard vibrations too," Sudheer said.
This is the second time this week that the people in Kodagu are experiencing tremors, following a similar occurrence in Devasturu and Negalle on Thursday.
