While the three Lok Sabha seats that went to polls on June 23 are in Uttar Pradesh (Rampur and Azamgarh) and Punjab (Sangrur), the seven assembly seats are spread across Tripura, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi

A setback to the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, BJP candidate Ghanshyam Lodhi won the Rampur Lok Sabha seat by over 40,000 votes. In Azamgarh also, BJP candidate Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ won by defeating SP’s Dharmendra Yadav. The bypolls were necessitated after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and SP leader Azam Khan resigned from Azamgarh and Rampur seats, respectively.

The counting of votes has begun for the three Lok Sabha seats and seven assembly seats spread across five states and Delhi, where voting for bypolls were held on June 23.

Counting of votes began at 8 am under multi-tier security cover, with postal ballots to be counted first and then EVMs to be opened.

While the three Lok Sabha seats that are up for grabs are in Uttar Pradesh (Rampur and Azamgarh) and Punjab (Sangrur), the seven assembly seats are spread across Tripura, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

Tripura has the highest number of four seats — Agartala, Jubarajnagar, Surma and Town Bardowali. Tripura CM Manik Saha, who contested from Town Bardowali, won the seat. This was a crucial bypoll for the Saha as he needed to win the seat to continue as the chief minister. He is a Rajya Sabha member who was sworn in last month after the then chief minister Biplab Deb’s sudden resignation.
