After the Panvel Municipal Corporation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued toll-free numbers to register a complaint regarding unauthorized hoardings, banners or posters in the city. The civic body has also warned citizens and agencies of legal action if they are found putting hoardings and damaging trees.

Early this month, PMC issued a toll-free number following the order of the Bombay High Court that asked all civic bodies in the state to issue toll-free numberss for common citizens to inform about unauthorised hoardings or banners.

The NMMC has warned citizens, institutions and social organisations to not put advertisements in the NMMC area without permission from the civic body. “We have also asked to not put any advertisements on the trees to harm them. If anyone is found to be damaging trees, legal action will be taken against them,” said an official from NMMC. He added that toll-free numbers have been made available for the citizens to inform the Corporation.

Apart from 10 toll-free numbers, the civic body has also issued a WhatsApp number to register complaints. “Aware citizens are requested to send details with photographs on WhatsApp number at 8422955912 if they find advertisements, hoardings, banners, posters without permission,” said the official, adding that citizens have always been active contributors to the cleanliness of the city.

Earlier, taking a serious note of the menace of illegal banners and hoardings by political parties and their workers in Mumbai and other cities and towns in the state, the Bombay High Court had directed the Maharashtra government and all civic bodies and district councils to submit a report on steps taken against such hoardings and banners. The civic bodies were supposed to issue a toll-free number for the public to complain about illegal banners and hoardings. While hearing a bunch of PILs, the High Court had given decisions from time to time including issuing a toll-free number.
