KOLKATA: Lalbazar has instructed all police stations of the city to treat traffic related offences seriously and follow all legal procedures and legal evidence collection before granting bail to traffic offenders from the police station.
Where the offence is of grave nature, the cops have been advised to try and produce the accused in court and act according to orders instead of taking decisions themselves.
The fresh set of instructions, claimed sources, will ensure that offences like drunk driving are taken seriously every time the traffic guard hands over such an offender to the local police station.
More than 20 fatal accidents in the city in the past two months has led Lalbazar top brass, led by commissioner Vineet Goyal, to instruct his men to find multiple ways to reduce the high numbers.
Other measures suggested are joint nakas and surprise joint checks at all accident-prone points of the city. “The commissioner has insisted that not only the traffic guard OC, but even the local police station OC must visit spots where serious accidents are taking place so that he can provide the necessary back up to the traffic guards.
