PUNE : The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will begin a survey of sewage treatment plants in housing societies.
The administration has given directives to housing complexes to treat sewage on their premises. Societies not operating treatment plants properly will be fined. Any housing society having more than 150 flats has to treat sewage on its premises as per the law.
“The survey will ensure that the STPs at the societies are run and maintained properly,” said Vikram Kumar, commissioner, PMC.

Civic officials said that the initiative is aimed at reducing load of STPs. The aim is to ensure that the sewage generated in the city is treated. “It has been found that some housing societies are taking the benefit of tax dis- count by showing that they have operational STPs,” said a senior PMC official.
A total of 744 MLD of sewage is generated in the PMC limits The treated effluent is discharged into Mula-Mutha rivers.
