Kanpur Central, one of the major railway stations in Uttar Pradesh, is all set for a cool new avatar. The Ministry of Railways recently posted a proposed design of Kanpur Central via its official Twitter handle that showed an impressive architectural marvel. The redevelopment project is being undertaken by the North Central Railways.

At an estimated cost of Rs 712 crore, the new building of Kanpur Central is projected to come up in next 36 months. “Notice inviting tenders were issued last week,” NCR’s CPRO Shivam Sharma confirmed to Express Infra’s Surabhi Pandey. The new railway station will be a seven-storied building on city side popularly known as ‘Ghantaghar’ side in Kanpur.

With finalisation of the master plan of the redevelopment project, now the focus is on the detailed project report, which will be completed soon, railway official said.

As part of the overhaul, Kanpur Central will get world-class amenities such as food plaza, food courts along with basement parking that will ease the vehicular congestion in that area. The Indian Railways is committed to the cause of climate wellbeing and Kanpur Central redevelopment project is also a proof of the approach. NCR CPRO Shivam Sharma said that the Kanpur Central station will be constructed as a ‘green building’.

This means that the structure would utilised the freely available sunlight and minimise the usage of artificial lighting. This will help in reducing the light pollution. The master plan also talks about installing rooftop solar panels that will help in generating power for the station. Special focus will also be given on energy efficiency.

It should be noted that earlier this year, the Narendra Modi government had allocated Rs 12,000 crore during the 2022-23 Rail Budget for the redevelopment of the stations including Prayagraj and Kanpur.

From Uttar Pradesh to Madhya Pradesh, the Indian Railways has been refurbishing the key stations to meet the present-day demands. Recently the West Central Railways had posted a ‘then and now’ photo collage of Bhopal railway station showing the makeover.
