Rajkot: The Rajkot traffic police have collected a total fine of Rs 1.78 crore for just 23,418 e-challans out of a total outstanding 1.25 lakh of Rs nine crore issued in the last six months.
The amount was recovered after cops issued notices to e-challan defaulters of the last six months, giving them options to pay the outstanding amount, settle the issue in Lok Adalat held on Sunday or face legal action.
Meanwhile, the police suspended issuing of e-challans for a week from Monday. The traffic police started aggressively recovering the outstanding fine of the last six months after people started approaching various courts with pleas that police have no legal authority to collect the fine if six months have lapsed after issuing notice, and if prosecution was not launched against the defaulters.
The total outstanding amount for 25 lakh e-challans is more than Rs 150 crore since 2017.
The traffic police sent sms notices to about 63,000 defaulters stating that they should pay the fine or face a court case.
VR Malhotra, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) said, “We will now file non-cognizable cases in the court against those who have not paid the fines.”
There is huge resentment among daily commuters against e-challans, forcing MLA Govind Patel to represent the home department and city police commissioner requesting lenient approach. “The aim is not to collect fines but instill traffic discipline among commuters. We have suspended issuing e-challans for a week with the expectation that people will voluntarily follow the rules. We will observe the situation and start issuing memos from next week and become stricter,” Malhotra added.
