Harkes has been a top performer for United since arriving from DC United in 2019 and new boss Jack Ross wants to work with him.

But despite appearing to confirm he was staying back on June 18, the contract hasn’t yet been finalised.

The midfielder missed the beginning of United's pre-season training this week as he was still away in America enjoying a break.

But Harkes is understood to be on his way back over the pond to the UK as the two parties prepare to continue contract talks.

And the 27-year-old, who has been targeted by English side Morecambe, is still assessing his options.

United’s deal remains waiting to be signed and they are still keen to push it over the line, but now face an anxious wait to see if someone steps in to steal him.

Meanwhile, Dundee United paid tribute to Danish Hall of Famer Finn Dossing this week as he died aged 81.

Dossing grabbed a whopping 76 goals in 115 appearances for the Tannadice men during the 1960s.

The Mighty Finn maintained strong links to United after his retirement and was one of the first players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when it launched in 2008.

An ArabTRUST member, he had a supporters’ club named after him - the Finn Dossing Argyll Arabs.

He was also one of the first four honorary members of Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation.

Speaking back in 2008, he said: “After all these years I still feel myself as a Dundee United player. This is my club.”

More from The Scottish Sun

A Dundee United statement read: "Dundee United are saddened to learn of the passing of Hall of Fame inductee Finn Dossing at the age of 81.

"Everyone at Dundee United would like to pass on their condolences to Finn’s wife Bente, sons Michael and Morten and the rest of his family and friends."
